Erg Chebbi Dunes
Things to do in Merzouga with vetted local guides
Merzouga is the main gateway to the Moroccan Sahara and the village at the foot of Erg Chebbi, a 28-kilometre sea of golden dunes rising up to 150 metres. Most Sahara tours end here: you arrive in the afternoon, ride a camel caravan at sunset, sleep in a Berber tented camp, watch the stars without light pollution, then return at sunrise. Beyond the dunes, Merzouga has more to offer, Dayet Srij is a seasonal salt lake that attracts flamingos from March to May, and Khamlia is a Gnawa music village. Spring and autumn are the best seasons; summer days exceed 45 degrees.
