M'Hamid is the southernmost end of the paved road in Morocco, where the Drâa River disappears into the sands and the true Sahara begins. From here you cross into Erg Chigaga, a remote 40-kilometre stretch of high dunes far from the tourist crowds. It is also home to the Taragalte Festival, an annual gathering of Saharan musicians and nomadic communities.
