Why most 7-day itineraries are impossible
If you Google "7 day Morocco itinerary" you will find blogs that try to fit Marrakech, Casablanca, Rabat, Fes, Chefchaouen, the Sahara, the Atlas and Essaouira into one week. This is geographically and humanly impossible. You would spend 60 hours in vehicles to see each city for 4 hours, and arrive home wishing you had stayed longer in any one place.
Here is what 7 days in Morocco can realistically deliver, designed by someone who lives here. Three routes. Pick one.

Route A: Marrakech, Atlas and Sahara (recommended)
This is the route I send 80 percent of my visitors on. You see the imperial city, the High Atlas and the great dunes, eat well every day, and return home with energy left.

Day 1: Arrival in Marrakech
Land at Menara Airport. Riad pickup or the official taxi to your riad in the medina (see Marrakech airport to the medina for prices). Mouassine or the Kasbah are the best neighbourhoods to stay in. Settle in. Mint tea on the rooftop.
Late afternoon: an easy first walk toward Jemaa el-Fnaa. Watch the orange juice sellers and the storytellers. As the sun sets, climb to the rooftop of Café de France or Café Glacier for a mint tea and the call to prayer over the Koutoubia minaret. Do not over plan day 1. Let the city introduce itself.
Day 2: Marrakech medina, slow pace
Breakfast at the riad, then the sights: Bahia Palace is the most beautiful, and the Saadian Tombs are nearby and quick. Walk through the souks for spices, leather and textiles (look today, buy at the end of the trip). A hammam in the late afternoon.

Days 3 to 5: The Sahara loop
Merzouga dunes

- Day 3: Leave Marrakech at 8am and cross the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m) with photo stops. Explore Aït Benhaddou, the famous earthen ksar, then continue through Ouarzazate to the Dades Valley. Hotel night.
- Day 4: The rock formations of the Dades Gorge, then a walk between the 200-metre red walls of the Todra Gorge. Across the pre-Sahara to Merzouga, a sunset camel ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes, dinner and music around the fire, and a night in a desert camp. This is the magic day.
- Day 5: Sunrise over the dunes, breakfast in camp, and the long drive back to Marrakech, arriving in the evening.
The tour includes both nights, all breakfasts, 1 lunch, 2 dinners, an English-speaking guide and pickup from your riad. Leave your big suitcase at the Marrakech riad and take a small bag.

Day 6: An easy Atlas Mountains day
After two big drives, keep it gentle. The Ourika Valley and Berber villages day trip is only an hour from Marrakech, from €20 per person and rated 5.0 from 20 reviews. Day 7: Free morning and an Agafay sunset
Last souk shopping in the morning. Route B: Marrakech, Atlas and Essaouira (for slower trips)
If long drives are not for you, this is the gentler 7-day version.
- Day 1: Arrival in Marrakech, evening walk in the medina
- Day 2: Marrakech medina, hammam, street food tour in the evening
- Day 3: Atlas Mountains: Imlil or Ourika
- Day 4: To Essaouira (3 hours). Afternoon on the ramparts, fresh fish at the port. The Essaouira trip is a private car for up to 7 people from €180; ask the host about staying the night.
- Day 5: Essaouira: beach, medina, kitesurfing or a camel ride on the beach
- Day 6: Back to Marrakech. Light afternoon, final shopping
- Day 7: Agafay sunset trip, then fly home

Route C: Fes to Marrakech via the Sahara
Fly into Fes, fly out of Marrakech, and see two imperial cities with the desert in between.
- Days 1 and 2: Fes. One of the oldest and largest medinas in the world, with no cars inside. What to skip on a 7-day trip
- Casablanca (a working city, more interesting on a longer trip)
- Fes, unless you pick Route C (it needs 2 days minimum)
- Chefchaouen (you cannot fit it into 7 days from Marrakech)
- The Atlas Film Studios in Ouarzazate (underwhelming for most)
When to extend to 10 days
