Why Morocco Is One of the World's Best Honeymoon Destinations

A Morocco honeymoon gives you four trips in one. You can wake up in a 17th century riad in Marrakech, share a private hammam in the afternoon, watch the sun set from a roof terrace over the medina, and three days later be camped in the Sahara with your own butler and a tent the size of a small house. A week after that you can be eating fresh-grilled fish on a windswept Atlantic beach in Essaouira.

It is also one of the easiest exotic honeymoons to book. A 3 hour flight from London or Paris, no jet lag, no malaria, no visa for most travellers. Just a deeply romantic country with a luxury hospitality scene that has grown up specifically for couples.

The Five Honeymoon Experiences

A private luxury riad

Tiled courtyards, fountain in the centre, rose petals on the bed, breakfast on the rooftop. The classic Marrakech and Fes honeymoon base.

A night in the Sahara

Private camp under the stars in Erg Chebbi (Merzouga) or the Agafay desert. Dunes, candle-lit dinner, no light pollution, no other guests.

A couples hammam

Traditional black soap, kessa scrub, rose oil massage. Most luxury riads have a private hammam you can book just for the two of you.

Atlas mountain escape

Two nights in a Kasbah hotel in Imlil or the Ourika valley. Mule rides through Berber villages, snow on the peaks, fireplaces in the rooms.

Essaouira on the coast

Whitewashed medina by the Atlantic, oysters at the port, sunset on the ramparts. The slow end to a busy honeymoon.

Private chef and driver

Skip taxis and group tours. A private driver and a home-cooked tagine on a rooftop is what makes a Morocco honeymoon feel personal.

When to Go on a Morocco Honeymoon

March to May is the most romantic season. Wildflowers in the Atlas, almond blossoms in the south, warm days, cool nights, gardens at their best.

September to November is the other ideal window. The desert is finally cool again after summer, the medinas have emptied of crowds, and the light for photos is famously good.

December to February is cool but very romantic, especially in the Atlas mountains where some Kasbah hotels have snow on the peaks behind them. Bring layers. Riad rooftops are still usable in the sun.

June to August is too hot inland for most couples. Go to the coast (Essaouira, Asilah, Oualidia) and skip the desert.

Morocco Honeymoon FAQ

Is Morocco a good honeymoon destination?

Yes. Morocco offers a unique mix of luxury riads, private desert camps, hammam rituals and dramatic landscapes within a short flight from Europe. It is one of the most popular honeymoon destinations for couples who want culture, beach, mountains and desert in a single 10 to 14 day trip.

How many days do you need for a Morocco honeymoon?

10 to 14 days is ideal. A classic honeymoon route covers Marrakech (3 nights), a private desert camp in Merzouga or the Agafay (2 nights), Fes (2 nights) and Essaouira or the Atlas mountains (2 to 3 nights). Shorter 7 day trips work if you focus on Marrakech plus a luxury desert extension.

When is the best time of year for a Morocco honeymoon?

March to May and September to November. The shoulder seasons give you warm days, cool evenings, comfortable desert nights and far smaller crowds than summer.

Where should we stay on a Morocco honeymoon?

Luxury riads in the medinas (La Mamounia, Royal Mansour, El Fenn in Marrakech; Riad Idrissy or Dar Seven in Fes), a private luxury desert camp in Erg Chebbi or the Agafay, a boutique riad in Essaouira, and optionally a Kasbah hotel in the Atlas.

How much does a Morocco honeymoon cost?

A mid-range 10 day honeymoon for two runs $2,500 to $4,500. Luxury palaces plus high-end desert camps go from $7,000 to $15,000. Budget couples can do a 10 day trip for under $1,800 by staying in good but simple riads and using shared transfers.

Is Morocco safe for honeymoon couples?

Yes. Morocco is one of the safest countries in North Africa and the Middle East for tourists. Holding hands and showing affection in public is fine in tourist areas and in private riads. Same-sex couples are best discreet in public, although most riads do not bat an eye at same-sex bookings.

Do you need a visa for a Morocco honeymoon?

Most EU, UK, US, Canadian, Australian and Gulf nationals do not need a visa for stays under 90 days. Bring a passport with at least 6 months of validity.
