If you only make one trip outside Marrakech, make it this one. Anima Garden sits about 27 km south of the city on the road to the Ourika Valley, and it is quieter, greener and far less crowded than any garden inside the medina. What is Anima Garden?

Anima Garden, also known as the André Heller Garden, is a three-hectare art garden created by the Austrian artist André Heller. It opened after years of work and it is not a botanical collection with labels on stakes. It is a garden laid out like a stage set.
You follow shaded paths between cactus, bamboo, palms and flowering shrubs. Every turn opens onto something new: a sculpture, a pavilion, a fountain, or a gap in the trees that frames the Atlas Mountains. Works and references from Picasso, Keith Haring and Rodin appear along the route, and there is a small indoor museum room near the entrance.
The atmosphere is the real draw. Because the garden is 40 minutes outside the city, it never fills up the way Jardin Majorelle does. There are long stretches where you have a whole section to yourself.
Anima Garden free shuttle: times and how to book
This is the part most visitors miss. Anima runs its own free shuttle bus for ticket holders, so you do not need a tour, a taxi or a rental car.
The bus leaves from the Koutoubia car park in Marrakech, signposted "Parking & Lavage", directly behind the Koutoubia mosque. It is an easy walk from anywhere in the medina.
Shuttle times:
The drive takes roughly 40 to 50 minutes each way, so either shuttle gives you about two and a half hours in the garden.
Reserve your seat online in advance. The shuttle is free but capacity is limited and it books out, especially in high season. Book it at the same time as your ticket and bring the confirmation with you.
Morning or afternoon shuttle?
Take the 9:30 am shuttle if: you are visiting between May and September, you want cooler temperatures and thinner crowds, or you want your afternoon in Marrakech free. You are back in the city by around 2 pm.
Take the 2:30 pm shuttle if: you are visiting in autumn, winter or spring, or you care about photographs. The late light through the trees is the best of the day, and you are back around 6:30 pm, right in time for dinner.
Getting to Anima Garden without the shuttle
If the shuttle is full or the timings do not suit you, a grand taxi or private driver will do the round trip and let you set your own schedule.
Set your GPS to Ourika rather than to Anima itself, since the address does not always show up. Follow the Ourika road out of Marrakech, and after roughly 27 km you will pass a Total service station on the left. About a kilometre later there is a sign for Anima on the right, followed by a short unpaved track.
Going independently has one real advantage: you can arrive at opening time, before the first shuttle pulls in around 10:10 am, and have the garden almost entirely to yourself.
Café Paul Bowles: lunch inside the garden
There is a proper café inside Anima, named after the American writer who spent most of his life in Morocco. It is not a snack kiosk. Café Paul Bowles serves a real lunch along with mint tea, fresh juices and cake, at tables set under the trees with the Atlas in the distance.
Build your visit around it. Walk for an hour first, then sit down and eat while the light softens. It is the difference between a garden visit and an afternoon you remember.

Yes, and it is the day trip we recommend first to anyone staying more than two nights in Marrakech. The entry price is modest, the transport costs nothing, it works just as well for children as for adults, and it is the rare Marrakech outing where nobody is trying to sell you anything.
The only real mistake visitors make is turning up at the Koutoubia car park without a reservation. Book the ticket and the shuttle seat together, a few days ahead if you can, and the rest of the day takes care of itself.
